The economic scope of HTC is diverse. A major field of application is an environmentally friendly disposal of organic residues. Nowadays many of these materials are simple composted, releasing large amounts of CO₂ in the process. Other technologies have only limited capabilities for treating most kinds of biomass and produce large amounts of residual products themselves, like digestate from biogas production.

In addition to using it as CO₂ neutral fuel, HTC coal can be advantageously used in other fields of application. These opportunities are developed in close collaboration with the Max-Planck-Institute for Colloids and Interfaces, as well as a number of other research partners.
